Things to know for First Grade

I am sending this home before Parent Night in hopes that you will be able to review these points of interest before you come to school.

READING LOG

A weekly reading log will be sent home every on Friday.  Please give this your attention and complete every day.  When you read to your child please initial and write the number of minutes you read.  It is recommended to read at least 20 minutes each night. Your child will be given a sticker for a reward chart in the classroom.  When this is completed I will give them special recognition.

HOMEWORK
There will be homework in  Math 4 nights a week.  This is Saxon math curriculum. The homework should take no more than 20 minutes.  If it is taking longer, please contact me.  I will adjust the assignment.  We will have a spelling test on Fridays.  These are words that coordinate with the reading curriculum.  I will send home a list on Monday and will publish the list on the web.

GYM
We will have gym 1 day a week with Mr. Mike Oberski.  I will let you know the times as soon as I know them.  Each child must have shoes for gym that we will keep at school.  Your child’s name should be in the shoes so that we can find them.

LUNCH MONEY
When you send lunch money or milk money to school it is advised that you use some kind of container that your child will recognize as “lunch money”.  As the year progresses you will be sending money with you child for many different reasons.  I would appreciate it if you always LABEL what the money is for.

SNACK
Send a nutritious snack with your child each day.  We have this around 10:30 and 2:30

WATER
It is OK for the children to bring a water bottle to school.  They can keep these at their desk during the school day.  Please send water in bottles that have a “sports capnot a screw on cap.  Our room is very hot in the fall and spring and very dry in the winter.

BIRTHDAYS
Let me know a few days ahead of time when you will be sending in a birthday treat.  We have 12 children.  The custodian has requested that we do not have drinks in the room for birthdays.  We will be able to have juice or
pop for our Halloween and Valentine parties.

MASS
We will attend mass each week, sitting with the 8th graders.  The children are required to memorize the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be.  I usually listen to these in the spring.

BOOK ORDERS
I will send this home with your child every month.  This is a great source of inexpensive quality literature.
Order when it is convenient for you.  You should make a check out to the company.

Each child should bring an old sock to school to use as an eraser for their white dry erase boards.  We use the
white board for practice in writing and drills for math as well as phonics. Every few weeks ask your child if
he/she needs crayons or pencils.  They seem to go through these very fast.

Please donate to the class one of the following, September and/or February:

           A box of Kleenex

           A roll of paper towel

A container of antibacterial hand wipes

I will be available to talk to you anytime.  Mornings are very hectic so please stop by after school if you would like to talk to me.  We would like to send as much information as we can through the web and e-mZil to conserve on copy paper and trinter ink.  Please leave  your e-mail address with me when you come for Parent Night. Send your child on the bus and have a great day.  We are very fortunate to have the availability of the East China Buses.
Our parking situation is extremely critical.  If your child is a bus rider I will put him/her on the bus every day unless I get a written note from you to do otherwise.  We often have children hoping their parent will pick them up when in fact they are not and should get on the bus.

When you are sending any money to school, other then for lunch, please use a labeled envelope.  This is money for McDonald’s orders, book orders, fundraisers, charity bake sales, etc.  Our charity bake sale is scheduled for March.

I look forward to working with you this year.  The children and I will have a great time learning to read.
